The University of the Witwatersrand department of Pharmacy aims to provide exemplary undergraduate, professional and graduate education in the health professions and natural sciences. Pharmacy is a dynamic, patient-oriented profession committed to fulfilling the health care needs of South Africa and its people.

Movement is away from the traditional compounding and dispensing of medicine towards a more professional advisory and primary health care role. Through innovative application of knowledge and skills the pharmacist becomes involved in the healing, serving and education – a substantial contribution to the community of which the Pharmacist is an integral part.

The Wits Pharmacy Student Council (WPSC) is a student body that aims to improve the academic and social lives of pharmacy students at Wits University. WPSC hosts many social events throughout the academic year, the highlight of which is the annual pharmacy braai.

WPSC also has a mentorship programme where students in their third and fourth year of study, mentor and guide first and second year students with academic and social issues.

Another responsibility that WPSC has is to represent pharmacy students in the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, as well as the Faculty of Health Sciences in this way we ensure the wellbeing of our students is always considered.

WPSC also hosts various charity events, from our annual Easter Drive to projects that vary with every year; WPSC tries to focus on causes that have particular importance in the health sector. These charity events also offer our students an opportunity to form bonds with other students and the people we work with further enhancing the “Wits Experience”.
